Where to Eat in Bayrischzell

The Alpenrose is one of the few places in Bayrischzell where the kitchen stays open straight through the day, and you don't have to be a hotel guest to enjoy it. I've eaten here a handful of times myself, and it's never let me down. The dining room has a really nice feel to it, and if the weather's good, a seat out in the beer garden is about as pleasant as it gets around here.

Restaurant Alpenrose sits right in the center of the village next to the train station, so it's easy to reach whether you're passing through for the day or coming down off the trail. Bavarian tavern cooking, a handful of vegan dishes, plus a beer garden, a sunny terrace and a small bar. It's a solid all-around package, and honestly not something you can take for granted in a village this size. Fans of the German TV series Frühling might recognize the building as the Hotel Leutmeier from the show. If you're thinking of staying the night, you'll find all the details on the lodging page.

Tavern Classics and Then Some

The menu mixes Bavarian standards with more modern dishes and a good handful of vegan options, which for a village tavern in Bayrischzell is not something you see everywhere. Because the kitchen runs straight through from noon to 9 pm, you can drop in for a hot meal in the afternoon after a hike instead of settling for a cold plate of bread and cheese.

Inside, the wood-paneled Stube is especially worth a look. It's lovingly put together, with a warmth you just don't get in your typical hotel restaurant. It's the kind of room where you end up lingering. And if you feel like a nightcap afterward, there's a small lounge-style bar that stays open until 10 pm.

Beer Garden and Sunny Terrace

When the weather cooperates, the Alpenrose has two spots outside: the beer garden tucked under shady trees, open from 11 am, and the sunny terrace with a view straight out at the mountains. The terrace really comes into its own in the evening. As a sundowner spot with an Alpine panorama, there's not much in Bayrischzell that compares.

Both areas are open to everyone, not just overnight guests. And dogs are welcome in the restaurant and out in the beer garden.

Before You Go

This is one of the few spots in Bayrischzell with a hot kitchen all day long, which comes in handy after a hike or when everywhere else has already closed up. In good weather, head for the beer garden in the middle of the village. It's worth booking ahead, especially on weekends.
