In the valley the sun can be shining while fog clings to the Wendelstein, or the other way around. If you're out and about in Bayrischzell, it's better to look at two elevations: the valley and the mountain.
Here you'll find the current forecast, three of my favorite webcams, and my personal tips on what's really worth doing in which weather, without a checklist of must-sees.
Bayrischzell sits at 802 m, the Wendelstein at 1,838 m, the Sudelfeld pass at 1,097 m. On average the village counts around 70 snow days a year.
The Current Forecast
Live data from Open-Meteo for the village at 802 m. At the Wendelstein it is noticeably cooler and windier.
Live Webcams from the Mountain
Three webcams I check regularly myself. The two Wendelstein cams all year round, for the long-range views. The Walleralm cam mainly in winter, to judge the snow conditions at the Sudelfeld.
Live webcams from the region. The images are loaded directly from the providers (foto-webcam.eu and Sudelfeld). Your IP address is transmitted to these providers in the process.
When the Sun Is Out
Not a complete hiking map, but the routes and places I personally recommend again and again, because they offer something you won't find quite like this anywhere else.

Wendelstein, the local mountain with a railway
When the view is clear, you ride up and suddenly stand above it all. Three options: the cog railway from Brannenburg, the cable car from Osterhofen, or on foot. At the top there's a chapel, an observatory, and a cave.

Wendelstein Maennlein Trail
A themed trail that works with children, but it's not a flat kids' walk. Sturdy footwear is a must.

Village walk in ten stations
For anyone who wants to stroll rather than hike: a loop through the village, from the church to the Kneipp park. Works even in changeable weather.

Ursprung Trail
A wonderful long-distance trail, every stage is worth seeing. No mass tourism, plenty of little viewpoints.

Sudelfeld in summer
Most people only know the Sudelfeld as a ski area. In summer it's an open hiking region, ideal if you don't want a steep climb.

Kloo-Ascher valley
A quiet valley toward the Grundalm. Reachable on foot or by bike. Little bustle.

Fairytale Forest Fischbachau
A family loop with gnomes and fairytale stations in the Leitzach valley, about 10 km from Bayrischzell. Works well with children up to around age 8.

Schliersee and Schliersbergalm
15 minutes by car. The lake to walk around or swim in, the Schliersbergalm to ride up by cable car, with a playground, summer toboggan run, and views at the top.

Thiersee, across the border
On the Austrian side, just under 20 minutes' drive. A small mountain lake, quieter than the Schliersee, with a very pretty loop trail. A lovely bathing lake in summer.

Sorted by distance from Bayrischzell, the nearby tips first, then the day-trip section.
Right in the Village and Nearby
Birkenstein Pilgrimage Chapel
The closest indoor tip, about 15 kilometers away. A baroque pilgrimage chapel, dark wood, votive pictures, an unusually dense atmosphere. Even people who have nothing to do with religion grow quiet here. Free admission.
Deisenried Weather Mine
A show mine near Fischbachau, about 10 km. An old tunnel you can walk through on guided tours, cool, damp, geologically interesting. Nothing spectacular, but an unusual item on the program that works in any weather.
Schliersee Local History Museum ↗
A farmhouse museum with original furnishings, about 15 km from Bayrischzell. Small, honest, not a modern experience museum, more a look back at how people really lived here. Worth an hour.
Monte Mare Schliersee ↗
An adventure pool with a sauna area, about 10 km. We go swimming here with the family now and then, it's nice, and the admission is fair for what you get. More a family pool than a wellness temple. When the weather outside is bad, it tends to get busy here too, so if you're after quiet, come at off-peak times.
Slyrs Distillery, Neuhaus ↗
A Bavarian whisky distillery, about 12 km. Tours with tastings and its own shop. Interesting to see how it's made here even without a taste for whisky. Booking recommended.
Markus Wasmeier Open-Air Museum, Neuhaus
A historic farming village to look at and touch, about 12 km. Despite "open-air" in the name, many covered areas, workshops, and exhibitions, so it works in the rain too. One of the best museums in the region.
A Day Trip, a Bit Further
Lantenhammer Distillery, Hausham ↗
A distillery with tours and tastings, about 20 km from Bayrischzell. Focused on fruit brandies and liqueurs. More compact than Slyrs, but with real showcase character.
Kufstein Fortress ↗
A medieval fortress above the town, about 25 km. Reachable by funicular, with plenty of space indoors and out. If you want to spend half a day, this is the place.
Therme Bad Aibling ↗
A large thermal spa, about 30 km. Seven domes, several pools, an expansive sauna area. Admission isn't cheap, but the facility is among the better ones in Upper Bavaria.
Olaf Gulbransson Museum, Tegernsee ↗
A museum for the Norwegian-Bavarian caricaturist, about 30 km. Small, focused, well curated. More for people who enjoy art and drawing.
Tegernsee Phantastisch, Rottach-Egern ↗
A family indoor play world, about 35 km. A large soft-play area, trampolines, climbing. Works with children up to around age 12.
Spielarena Bad Wiessee ↗
An indoor playground for younger children, about 35 km. More compact than Tegernsee Phantastisch, geared more toward preschool age.
Lokschuppen Rosenheim, Roman exhibition ↗
An exhibition hall in an old engine shed, about 40 km. Changing major exhibitions, the Roman exhibition is currently on. Check what's showing before you go.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Weather
How does the weather in Bayrischzell compare to the Inn valley?
Bayrischzell sits at 802 m. On average it's 2 to 4 degrees cooler than the Inn valley and gets noticeably more precipitation. In winter there's still snow here when it's long gone down below.
Is the Wendelstein worth it in changeable weather?
Changeable, yes; if the Wendelstein is wearing a cap of cloud, rather not. With clouds you'll see nothing up top. Before heading up, be sure to check the summit webcam, it shows right away whether the view is clear.
When is the best time to visit Bayrischzell?
Winter from January to March for snow and skiing, May and June for hikes without the crowds, September and October for clear views and quiet huts. High summer is popular but can get busy.
Which webcam shows Bayrischzell directly?
The webcams here show Wendelstein West and Wendelstein East as well as the Walleralm at the Sudelfeld, the three elevations that matter most for weather and conditions. There is a village camera, but its quality is very outdated.
Is Bayrischzell worth a visit in bad weather too?
Yes, Bayrischzell works in the rain as well. The bowling alley in the town hall is an underrated indoor classic. The family hotel Das Bayrischzell also admits day guests to its wellness and pool area. The Fruehling filming locations can be explored just as well in the rain, and many scenes of the series were shot in changeable weather anyway. If you'd rather stay inside, listen to an episode of the Talgeschichten podcast or find the region's slower rhythm in cafes and inns. For bigger indoor trips there are museums, thermal spas, and distilleries within half an hour, see the bad-weather list above.
