Day Trips in the Area
Worthwhile spots in the region, from the pilgrimage church to the waterfall.

Birkenstein Pilgrimage Church
Since 1673, Birkenstein has been a place of pilgrimage perched on a rock in the Leitzach valley, a place to pause and reflect where people have come to pray and find comfort for more than 350 years. The chapel is famous for its Baroque interior, with 92 angels around the altar, and is considered the most important Marian pilgrimage site in Upper Bavaria.

Fischbachau Fairytale Forest
An hour through a moody stretch of forest near Fischbachau, past brightly painted gnomes and faces carved into tree trunks. A walk in the woods for families with little kids that gives you more than your average stroll.

Wetterstollen Deisenried Mine
Since 2025, a freshly restored show mine near Deisenried has been telling the story of mining in this region. It's a trip underground where history hits all your senses, cold, damp, and genuinely impressive.

The Tatzelwurm Waterfall
Between Bayrischzell and Oberaudorf, the Auerbach plunges 95 meters (310 ft) into a narrow gorge. It's a short walk from the parking lot, and well worth it if you're already in the area.

Wasmeier Open-Air Museum
More than twenty historic farmsteads and houses from the Bavarian highlands have been rebuilt here, a walkable village straight out of the 18th and 19th centuries. A firsthand report on stepping back in time into the bare-bones reality of centuries past.
