Trails with a view

Bayrischzell is a true cross-country skiing village. More than 100 kilometers of groomed trails wind through the snowy Leitzach valley, about 50 kilometers for classic and about 50 kilometers for skating. The trails run across open meadows, along the edges of the forest and into the Ursprung valley, always with the mountains all around in view. Bayrischzell is certified as a DSV Nordic Aktiv Zentrum (a quality label of the German Ski Association).

The Kloo-Ascher valley

The Kloo-Ascher valley is known as one of the most snow-sure cross-country areas far and wide. The trail is often groomed from November and lasts well into spring. The further you ski into the valley, the more romantic it gets, and at the head of the valley a long, easy descent down to the Hauswies rewards you for the climb. Hidden under the snow there is something special, too: the rare hummocky meadows (Buckelwiesen) that formed at the end of the last ice age. In winter you can usually only guess at them, so if you want to see them, come back for a summer hike. By the way, the valley takes its name from the Kloohof farm in Geitau, which used to have its alpine pasture here.

Route 36 and the cross-country pin

For those with stamina there is Route 36, a 36-kilometer route right across the Bayrischzell trail network. Along the way there are five checkpoints that you tick off with the SummitLynx app. Make all five and you earn the Bayrischzell cross-country pin as a sticker. The municipality has all the details at www.bayrischzell.de/langlaufnadel-bayrischzell↗

Trail fee and guest card

A day ticket costs 7 euros, reduced 6 euros, and parking is already included. You can buy it at the ticket machines at the Sportalm, at Stocker, in Geitau and at the Bäckeralm, or with the Parkster app. If you ski more often, get the season pass for 60 euros, or 90 euros for families. Guests from Bayrischzell, Schliersee and Fischbachau ski free with their guest card, and children up to and including 17 ski free.

Prices and details last checked: 10.10.2026 with the municipality of Bayrischzell. For current availability and final prices, please contact the business directly.

Getting there, parking and the cross-country bus

At the trailheads, parking is included in the trail fee. The parking lot at the Zipflwirt is private and costs extra. Even easier is the free ski bus, which runs to the cross-country areas at Stocker, in the Ursprung valley and in Geitau, but only when the slopes and trails are open. Dogs are not allowed on the trails.

Lessons for beginners

If you want to give it a try for the first time or work on your technique, the Nordic Aktiv Schule Bayrischzell is the place to go. In winter there is a classic taster course on Fridays from early January to the end of February at 2:15 pm, free with the guest card. More at www.nordic-aktiv-schule.de/↗

For kids there is also a cross-country kids' area at the Tannerfeld, the Skitty World, when there is enough snow.

My favorite loop

My favorite area is the Kloo-Ascher valley. I ski from the Zipflwirt into the Kloo-Ascher valley through the forest, and after fresh snow it looks like something out of a fairy tale. I especially love the spots where the trail runs for a stretch right in the creek bed. You get that on the loop from the Zipflwirt to the Bäckeralm and on parts of the Kloo-Ascher loop.

I ski classic. It is more for people who want to enjoy nature, a kind of walk on skis. Skating tempts me too, though, because you get along faster, so maybe I will take a course with the Nordic Aktiv Schule this winter.

For me it is most beautiful right after fresh snowfall, when the trails have just been groomed, I am all about the scenery. You can ski well even when the winter scenery is missing and the trails are still in good shape, but I like it best in fresh snow.

For a break along the way: the Zipflwirt is no longer open to the public, only for private events. That leaves Jennys Loipenhütte and the Sportalm in Bayrischzell.

For getting started I recommend the short Melkstatt loop or, if you want a bit more, the Kloo-Ascher loop.
