Winter at Sudelfeld
Skiing right on your doorstep
Just a few minutes above Bayrischzell sits Sudelfeld, one of the most popular and biggest ski areas in Bavaria. 31 kilometers of groomed runs and 13 lifts, including five chairlifts, from the wide practice meadow all the way to the sporty run down from Sudelfeldkopf.

Who Sudelfeld is right for
Sudelfeld is a classic family ski area. Not a huge resort like the ones over in Austria, but a small, almost homey area where you feel at ease right away. Wide, quiet slopes for practicing, plus sportier runs higher up. Modern chairlifts like the Waldkopfbahn and the Sudelfeldkopfbahn take you up in comfort. The ski schools mostly hold their lessons at the Wedellift and on the Hotelhang slope. Thanks to snowmaking, Sudelfeld is reliably skiable even in winters with little snow. There has never been a winter here without any skiing at all. As long as it is cold enough, and it usually is, the snow cannons can run.
Runs and lifts at a glance
Of the 31 kilometers of runs, 7.7 are easy, 18.6 intermediate and 4.8 difficult. Down below are the wide, gentle Wedellifts for practicing and ski lessons, higher up the chairlifts, above all the six-seater on Waldkopf and the eight-seater on Sudelfeldkopf, along with the sportier runs.

The main ticket office is at the Waldkopfbahn, where you will also find a ticket machine starting this season. The ticket office at the eight-seater on Sudelfeldkopf is no longer staffed every day, only on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and every day during the Bavarian school holidays. Instead there is a pick-up box there for tickets you bought online.
Which run for whom
If you like it sporty, head to Waldkopf, the run there is a black one. The Rosengasse is black too, and people often underestimate it: it can really burn your thighs. The last stretch of the Herrenabfahrt, which runs down along the Kitzlahner lift, is sporty as well.
For families and anyone who prefers to take it easy, there is the easy run on Sudelfeldkopf up by the Waller Alm and the Speckalm, with its own lift, the Wallerlift Monte Gogo, and down in the lower part of Sudelfeld by the Schindlberger Alm the double T-bar at the Wedellifts. In between you will find lots of red (intermediate) runs that average skiers handle just fine.
My favorite run and my ski day
My favorite run is the Damenabfahrt: from the top of the Kitzlahner down, past the Sonnenalm and over onto the Damenabfahrt. From there you either ski all the way down to the Sudelfeldkopfbahn or back over to the Kitzlahner. A tip for the way back to the Kitzlahner: you do pass the Sonnenalm again, but you need to turn off above it. If you ski down to the level of the Sonnenalm, you will have to walk uphill for a bit.
On a typical day I park down at the Waldkopfbahn in one of the main lots and ride the Waldkopfbahn up. From Waldkopf I ski down to the Mittleres Sudelfeld T-bar, take it back up a bit and then head over to the Kitzlahner.
When there is enough natural snow, the Schöngratbahn opens too, a really beautiful run that I happily recommend. Its slope has no snowmaking, so it only runs when there is enough snow. But even without it, Sudelfeld is big enough for a varied day of skiing.
Up the mountain without skis
You don't have to ski to have a great day up top. The eight-seater chairlift on Sudelfeldkopf takes hikers too. That way you can get up to the Speckalm and the Waller Alm without skis. You can even reach the Schindlberger Alm without any lift, on foot from the parking lot at the Waldkopf station, so no lift ticket needed.
Getting there and the ski bus
From Bayrischzell you are at the lifts in just a few minutes. During the season a free ski bus runs from Bayrischzell train station to the base station, so you can leave the car behind. You will find the current schedule on the ski area's website at www.sudelfeld.de/skibusse/↗
Parking
There are about 2,100 parking spaces at Sudelfeld. If you have a lift ticket while the lifts are running, parking is free, your license plate is registered when you buy the ticket. On nice weekends, though, when lots of people from the Munich area drive out to ski, long lines often form in front of the big main parking lot at the Waldkopfbahn.
My tip for days like that: park up on the main road, before the turnoff to the main parking lot. This lot is slightly offset across from the top of the Wedellifts. Put your skis on there and ski straight into the area. That way you skip the line at the main lot, while the crowd down there can easily need an hour to get up the mountain. The catch comes at the end of the day: to get back to your car you have to ride the Wedellift up, and the wait there can get longer too, because the ski schools hold their lessons on these lifts. And it is best to buy your ticket in advance in the Sudelfeld online shop. Ski passes are on a rechargeable chip card. So if you still have a card from last season, you can simply reload it online and skip the wait at the ticket office.
Crowds and the best times
During the week Sudelfeld is usually quiet, and compared to the other ski areas in the AlpenPlus group that Sudelfeld belongs to, it is generally more relaxed here. Demand is always high at the start of the season, but it drops off over the course of the winter. And yet March often still offers really great skiing. As soon as it gets a bit warmer, many people lose interest, even though spring skiing is usually fantastic and you often have the run almost to yourself in the best conditions.
Lift hours and operations
During the winter season the lifts run daily from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, on Christmas Eve until 3 pm. Most of the runs have snowmaking, only the Schöngratbahn area depends on enough natural snow. In stormy weather only limited operation is possible, then usually only the Wedellifts run while the chairlifts have to take a break.
Tickets and season pass
You can get day tickets in the Sudelfeld online shop at https://sudelfeld.axess.shop/de/ and at the ticket offices. The Alpen Plus season pass is available in presale at cheaper pre-season prices until November 21, 2026, all the details at www.sudelfeld.de/alpen-plus-saisonskipass/↗

Ski rental, ski lessons and gear at TOP ON SNOW
For everything around your ski day, TOP ON SNOW is there for you at Sudelfeld, the ski and snowboard school with rentals, at two locations. Up in the base station of the Waldkopfbahn you will find ski rental, service, ski storage and a shop under one roof. Down in Bayrischzell at the train station is the ski rental in winter and the bike shop with bike rental and service in summer. So you can rent at both places, and the shop at the train station also sells skis and ski gear.

There are ski lessons for every age and level: from the Ski-Minis (ages 3 and up) and the Zwergerl groups to kids' classes and lessons for adults, plus snowboarding from age 5, cross-country skiing and private lessons. For the little ones there is the Snuki-Kinderland in the lower part of Sudelfeld, about 150 meters past the ticket offices of the Waldkopfbahn toward the Wedellifts, with its own magic carpet and its own snowmaking. The Snuki-Mobil takes the ski school kids there. The ski school office is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm starting in December.
Mountain huts at Sudelfeld
The huts are just as much a part of Sudelfeld as the runs. These three sit right on the mountain. Each has its own character, and what they share is a great location right on the slopes. My tip: stop in before the big lunchtime rush. I usually alternate between the Waller Alm and the Speckalm, the food is good at both.
Speckalm

The Speckalm is cozy and furnished in a contemporary style, with lots of wood and character. In winter they serve a Bavarian Weisswurst breakfast. In front of the hut there is a lovely sun terrace where you can soak up the sunshine in winter and summer alike.
Waller Alm

The Waller Alm is a classic hut and deliberately kept traditional. A lot has stayed the way it always was over the years, and that is exactly what makes it so charming. The kitchen puts a lot of emphasis on cooking fresh, and the chef is at the stove himself. The hosts are approachable and friendly, and here too there is a lovely sun terrace for winter and summer.
Schindlberger Alm

The Schindlberger Alm is a cozy mountain hut built entirely of wood. In the second dining room there is a beautiful fireplace, and that is where the bar is too. On many summer weekends there is live music here. The host is nice and has a great sense of humor. Something special right at the entrance: you can even eat inside an old gondola. Add to that a big sun terrace with a bar. The Waldkopf-Stüberl belongs to the Schindlberger Alm as well. By the way, you can also reach the Schindlberger Alm without any lift, simply on foot from the parking lot at the Waldkopf station, no lift ticket needed.
And what about the Sonnenalm?
In the middle part of Sudelfeld you will also find the Sonnenalm. It changed hands a few years ago and has since been undergoing an extensive rebuild into a modern ski hut. Construction is still going on, and it is not yet clear when it will reopen regularly. As soon as it is ready, we will introduce it here.
Winter events
The classic is the Ski Opening, this winter on Sunday, December 13, 2026, from 10 am. At the start of the season you can have your skis freshly waxed or tuned and take a look behind the scenes of a ski area. For a few years now there has also been the ski instructor show by TOP ON SNOW on the Hotelhang slope by the Schindlberger Alm, this winter according to the town's events calendar on Monday, January 4, and Thursday, February 11, 2027, each at 5:30 pm, with après-ski at the hut from 4:30 pm beforehand. The few dates are well worth it, and there is always a great atmosphere. You will find all the winter dates in one place on our winter page.
Away from the slopes
At Sudelfeld itself everything revolves around skiing. There is no floodlit or night skiing here. For sledding and the very first turns of the littlest ones, there is the Winter-Erlebnispark at the Tannerfeld down in the village, and if you prefer skinny skis, the valley offers more than 100 kilometers of groomed cross-country trails.

Ski rental at the Sportalm
If you would rather rent your skis down in the valley, head to the Sportalm in Bayrischzell, at the southern edge of the village at Alpenstraße 70. They rent ski and cross-country gear, have their own ski workshop and offer a season rental for kids and teens that lasts all winter. As soon as their entry in our local businesses section is online, you will find more information here.
