Nordic Aktiv Schule Bayrischzell

The cross-country ski school in Bayrischzell: classic and skating lessons for beginners, advanced skiers and children, meeting at the Sportalm.

Advertisement: Nordic Aktiv Schule Bayrischzell is a paying partner of this site. What is paid for is the placement, not my judgement.

The Nordic Aktiv Schule is a dedicated cross-country ski school. There is no alpine skiing and no snowboarding here, only cross-country, classic and skating. That makes it the only school of its kind in Bayrischzell, at the other ski schools in the village cross-country is one offer among several.

It is run by Karin Weilbach, a Nordic Level 3 instructor of the German Ski Instructors Association (DSLV). Including her, the team counts 21 trained instructors, and the school is a certified professional cross-country school of the association.

My Take

I came along last winter

Last winter I joined one of the school's courses and took photos. I liked it so much that I am taking a cross-country course myself in the 2026/27 season. I learned it as a child, but I have forgotten too much of it since. I want to know how to do it properly. And skating really appeals to me too.

Classic or Skating?

Which technique suits you

If you already ski, snowboard, inline skate or ice skate, you can start straight away with skating. You need good balance for it, because the stride is the skating step. Without that kind of experience, the school recommends the classic technique. It is easier to learn because it resembles normal walking and running, and it is easier to keep your pulse under control.

The Lessons

For beginners, intermediates and advanced skiers

In the beginners' course you first get to know the equipment and move around on the flat. Then it is about gliding, stopping, braking and steering safely, and the first small climbs and descents. The course is available as one full day or spread over two mornings.

Intermediates work in smaller groups on gliding on one leg, flowing movement on climbs, different techniques and sporty descents. You should bring a good basic level of fitness. If you want to work on something specific, book a private lesson.

Groups follow the four learning levels of the instructors' association, from green for beginners through blue and red to black, which is about movement analysis, race-oriented technique and tactics on the trail.

For Children and Families

Children learn differently

With the children, it is all about play. They practise with ropes, balls, cones and poles, ski with their eyes closed or their ears covered, stamp shapes into the snow and take on their first descents. That gets them excited about the trail.

In the family course, parents learn how to make cross-country skiing fun for their children: no long distances, lots of games, and small climbs and descents you tackle together. In classic technique, children can join from the age of four.

How the Day Goes

From the info point to the trail

Be at the info point in the Sportalm about half an hour before the course starts. If you still need equipment, allow at least another half hour, on sunny days with good trails the rental shop gets busy. You rent right next door at the Sportalm, for classic and skating. The course starts at 10 am sharp.

There is warm tea along the way. The group has lunch at Jenny's trail hut with soups, toasties and hot drinks, or at the Sportalm Bistro when the weather is bad.

Dress in layers: functional underwear, a breathable, water-repellent jacket on top, and a vest or second jacket depending on the cold. Gloves should fit snugly so you can grip the poles well. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen belong in your bag too. Anything you don't need you can leave at the practice area.

If there is too little snow, a storm or an icy trail, the school cancels or postpones the course by the evening before at the latest. Cancelled courses are refunded.

The Trails
