The Sportalm is at the southern entrance to Bayrischzell, on the Alpenstraße. What I like about the location: the cross-country trail starts 50 metres from the building, the Schwebelift towards the Sudelfeld is 700 metres away and the station 500. You can rent gear for alpine skiing, cross-country and ski touring, plus snowshoes, for adults and children. The building also has its own ski workshop and a Salomon shop.

Ski Rental
From Bambini to race
For the slopes there are sets of skis, boots and poles in several levels, from allround and sporty up to premium race, plus a low-cost beginner set that can only be booked online. Children get their own sets, from the Bambini with 70 to 100 centimetre skis through the Teenies to the junior set. Helmets, goggles and poles can be added individually.
The seventh rental day is free. With the Alpenregion guest card or as a family of three or more, you get 10 percent from the third day, though not on the kids' sets and the online beginner set. Breakage insurance is included in the rental price, with an excess of 25 percent of the list price.
Cross-Country
Put on your boots and go
For the trail there are classic waxless skis for beginners and leisure skiers, skin skis for sporty skiers, skating sets from allround to carbon and junior sets for kids. If you only want a short loop, you can rent by the hour. You put your boots on right in the shop, then it is a few steps to the trail, or you hop on the cross-country bus. A reduced trail ticket is available right at the rental desk.
The Sportalm does not run lessons itself. For that it has worked for many years with the Nordic Aktiv Schule, whose meeting point is here in the building.
Ski Touring and Snowshoes
For your first tour
Your own touring gear quickly costs four figures, so for occasional tourers renting is the sensible start. There is a super-light touring set, a set for kids and snowshoes with poles. The team shows you how the bindings and skins work when you pick up, it takes a few minutes and saves trouble on the mountain. Check the avalanche report before you go, at the Sudelfeld the safest choice is the marked ascent track.
For Families
Season rental for kids and teens
For families, I find this the most practical option: children and teenagers up to 17 get skis, boots and poles for the whole winter. Hand-out starts on Wednesday, 28 October 2026. There are no reservations, just come by with your child and your ID and take everything with you ready adjusted. If the boots get too small during the season, they are swapped. Everything has to be back by 5 April at the latest.
Workshop and Shop
Ski service and Salomon shop
The in-house workshop does not just look after the rental skis but yours too. A precision machine handles even base structures and cross-country grinds, the judgement stays with the people. There is waxing, skin care for touring skis and binding adjustment and mounting.
The Sportalm has been a Salomon specialist dealer since 2006. It sells alpine and cross-country skis that the team has skied itself, and bindings are mounted in-house and adjusted to standard. If you are not happy with skis or boots you bought there, they adjust, swap or refund, within four weeks and at least until the end of January. You can try on Salomon shoes for hiking, running and winter, and anything not in stock is ordered.
Good to Know
Booking and pick-up
My tip: at weekends and in school holidays, book online, without a booking it can get tight. Not all stock is released online: if you cannot find skis in your size, come early at the weekend, around 10 am. A booking is held until 1 pm on the rental day, cross-country gear at weekends until 11 am. Cancellation is free up to two days before. For touring skis and snowshoes, fully booked online really means fully booked.
The queue is outside, so dress warmly. In winter the phone is rarely answered, online is quicker. If you arrive by electric car, you can charge in front of the building, the power comes largely from the shop's own roof.
