Dr. Mark Weber
Mark Weber is a lot more than just the vet in Frühling. He's one of the handful of characters who have been around from the very start, and he's also the man who keeps turning up in Katja Baumann's life, just never quite at the right moment.
Mark is played by Marco Girnth. Apart from Katja, he's the only character who has belonged to the world of the show since the pilot, even if his storyline keeps getting interrupted for long stretches at a time.
Who Mark Weber really is
Katja Baumann crosses paths with Mark Weber the moment she arrives in Frühling. Back then he's new in town too, hoping to set himself up as the local vet. He rents Katja rooms in his house, and that's where one of the longest and most tangled relationship dynamics in the entire series begins.
Mark is calm, dependable, and often right there exactly when you need him. At the same time, he's a character who never quite settles. He gets close and then slips away again. That very pattern is what makes him so interesting from a storytelling point of view.
While Katja puts down deeper and deeper roots in Frühling, Mark stays for a long time the man who comes, goes, comes back, and can never fully let go emotionally. That's exactly what makes him the perfect counterpart to Katja.
Mark and Katja, the chapter that never closes
The back and forth between Mark and Katja is the emotional backbone of Frühling for years on end. Mark makes a move on Katja early on, but she turns him down at first. By the time she starts to feel more for him, an old flame from his past suddenly reappears in his life.
The right moment always seems within reach, and it always slips away again. Sometimes it's new partners, sometimes physical distance, sometimes just bad decisions. When Mark moves to Leipzig to care for his sick father, he even sells his house in Frühling. Later Katja's trust breaks when she realizes he hasn't told her the whole truth.
That constant near miss is exactly what makes the character so strong. For Katja, Mark is never simply an ex or a friend. He's always the possibility of a different life, one that never quite became real.
Coming back, family, and new pressures
Later Mark returns to Frühling with his wife Trixie and their son Karl. That shifts his role once again. The potential partner becomes a family man who nonetheless stays emotionally close to Katja.
This stretch is especially interesting because it makes the character more complicated. Mark wants stability, but at the same time he drags old tensions right back into the village. His marriage to Trixie comes under even more strain in the newer seasons, partly over the question of whether Karl is really his biological son or whether André Fabiansky plays a bigger part in the story.
Season 15 turns genuinely dramatic when little Karl suddenly goes missing. Even though Mark isn't front and center throughout the current season, his storyline stays central to the wider world of the show.
Marco Girnth
Marco Girnth was born in Düsseldorf in 1970 and took an unusual path to acting. After finishing school and his civilian service, he first studied law before turning to acting. His first bigger television roles came in the mid 1990s, among them the soap Unter uns.
He became known to a wide audience above all through SOKO Leipzig, where he played Detective Chief Inspector Jan Maybach for many years. His final episode in the series aired in early 2026. There's a nice detail in the fact that he plays vet Mark Weber in Frühling at the same time and is set to play another vet going forward in Praxis mit Meerblick.
Girnth is one of those actors who makes his mark through steadiness rather than big headlines. That fits Mark Weber perfectly: not a loud character, but one who sticks around.
The man who keeps coming back
In Frühling, Mark Weber is the always-there-but-never-fully-there kind of man. He belongs to the show, yet he regularly drifts out of the immediate spotlight. That very timing is what makes the character so valuable for the drama.
He stands for possibilities left open, for feelings that never quite fade, and for a relationship with Katja that never really gets a final resolution over all those years. That's exactly why Mark, interruptions and all, remains one of the most important figures in the world of the series.
Mark Weber in the series
Mark has been part of Frühling since episode 1, though he isn't equally present in every phase. That's part of what makes his role special.
Will Mark Weber come back in a bigger way?
With Marco Girnth stepping away from SOKO Leipzig in early 2026, it's tempting to think his role in Frühling could get more room going forward. Officially that's still up in the air, but from a storytelling angle it would make a lot of sense.
After everything that's happened around Karl, Trixie, and André Fabiansky, Mark is exactly the kind of character the show could build a lot of story around again in season 16.
